Trust & Safety

Community Safety Guidelines

BarterLocal is built on mutual respect and neighborly aid. Follow these simple principles to ensure every exchange is pleasant, transparent, and secure.

Location Safety

Meet in Busy, Public Daylight Spots

Always arrange item pick-ups and returns in well-lit, public community locations such as local cafes, library entrances, university plazas, or busy transit hubs. Never invite unknown neighbors into private quarters without prior established trust.

Transparency

Keep Communication In-App

Use BarterLocal’s real-time messaging system for all logistics and agreements. This guarantees an immutable timestamped log of what was agreed upon if a misunderstanding or dispute arises.

Verification

Inspect Items Before Confirming

Take two minutes to check equipment condition, power tools operation, or book pages before clicking "Pickup Confirmed". Honest, clear inspection avoids surprises when returning items.

Community Trust

Review Neighbor Reputation

Examine neighbor profile reviews, completed exchange count, and verified email/phone badges before committing to valuable trades.

Fraud Prevention

Zero Cash Transactions

BarterLocal is 100% cash-free. If anyone asks for cash deposits, advance transfer fees, or wired funds, decline immediately and report the user.

Active Moderation

Report Policy Violations Promptly

Our root administration team proactively moderates and bans bad actors. If you experience harassment, spam, or repeated no-shows, use the "Report Neighbor" button on their profile.

What To Do If Something Goes Wrong

Every community member is protected by our resolution workflow

1Flag in the Exchange Room

If an exchange runs into a disagreement or no-show, mark the exchange as Disputed directly inside the exchange room.

2Submit Confidential Report

Visit the neighbor’s public profile and click "Report Neighbor". Detail the problem clearly with relevant facts.

3Root Admin Intervention

Our administrators review reports, adjust reputation scores, issue warnings, or enforce permanent account bans as appropriate.

The BarterLocal Community Pledge

"We treat each other’s tools, time, and skills with the highest degree of respect, returning items in the condition received and fostering a supportive neighborhood environment."
